The Disappointment That Is Capcom, Part 2.

And there you have it. The announcement that was supposed to shock the world, specifically PS3 fans, is Street Fighter 4.
STREET F***ING FIGHTER 4!!!!
Are you kidding me? That's the game that's supposed to make up for taking DMC4's exclusivity away and outright abandoning MH3 on the PS3 entirely? Street Fighter 4 is supposed to do that? What the f*** is WRONG with you Capcom? Have you lost it completely? Exactly what does another Street Fighter game, that will probably be just an HD version of Street Fighter 3 with possibly new characters/stages, have that is so frickin' great?
Since Street Fighter 3 was released, there have been an entire slew of Street Fighter remakes and spinoffs. Absolutely nothing new can be done with the franchise period. Making it 3D would totally suck ass because of the style of fighting Street Fighter games employ, unless you completely copy the DBZ games, which would ruin Street Fighter entirely.
Street Fighter 4 will be 2D. And it may as well be Street Fighter 40 for all the "innovation" the game can bring. Capcom is only making Street Fighter 4 because it will not take significant resources to make a 2D game, they won't spend as much money in development, the time it takes to develop will be short, and they can make more money off of it.
But guess what, short of hardcore SF fanboys/fangirls, this is an extremely disappointing announcement for PS3 fans. Here we are expecting something new, possibly different, and we instead get the ol' Capcom butt shaft and they give us what they have always given since the dawn of time. Another crappy remake of one of the few lasting franchises they have ever had.
Take a hint from your Megaman games. You aren't good at bringing new innovations to old classics.
There are two things I would love to see the Street Fighter franchise do that will never happen but might be good. Make the franchise move into the Action/Adventure genre the way Soul Calibur is doing on the Wii, or make an RPG out of it.
I can see Street Fighter Adventure being pretty good. You pick one character, and instead of just entering a fight, you go on the journey of the Street Fighter tournament, fighting people along the way, maybe taking up jobs to make some money for your travels. A 3D environment with real time battles in an expansive world using Street Fighter characters. You can allow them to use all of their moves, they can face the other SF characters as they encounter them, and there could be so much room for expansion.
As for the RPG version. You could start off with Ryu, Ken, and Chun Li in a real time battle style RPG trying to defeat some evil like M. Bison or something. Characters would leave the group as different objectives serving their own agendas reveal themselves, and new characters would join for the same reasons. You could have the story revolve around Ryu just minding his own business, travelling the world trying to get stronger, when he comes across, say, Akuma being his evil self and the story picks up from there.
There are so many things that can be done, but will the PS3 see any of that? Not bloody likely. We're going to get a 2D fighting game. Just another Street Fighter game in the long lineup of SF related games, one that will no doubt fall into obscurity just as its predecessor, SF 3(considered to be the BEST SF game ever made) did when people get bored of it after the first play through.
Arcades are gone, as such, 2D fighters don't hold the same appeal as they did when you could walk into an arcade and pit your skill against the awesome asian guy that handed you your ass on a silver platter. Now THAT was fun.
Capcom, you have officially become the second most complacent developer in the world. Bested only by EA.
EDIT: I forgot to mention that we get the oh so anticipated new release, Lost Planet.......wait a min.....THAT'S A G.D. 360/PC GAME THAT WE ARE GETTING PORTED!!!! Yeah, thanks for that "earth shattering" announcement.
How do we like you at the end of this week? So far, we still hate you. Thursday and Friday probably won't change our minds either. I can't believe you think that SF4 makes up for Monster Hunter 3.
